How to organize your adventure companion: the backpack

10 March 2025

Start well equipped and only with what you really need

When you go on an excursion, having a well-organized backpack makes all the difference. It’s not just about optimizing space, but also ensuring comfort, safety and freedom of movement. The load must always be well balanced and the objects that can be used during the journey must be easily accessible. How many times we had to stop, open our backpack and get on the trail looking for something. Or when we feel unstable on the trail, because the weights inside our backpack are not well distributed? We’ve put together some tips for you on how to pack your backpack in the most efficient way, to make it a reliable ally in any outdoor adventure.

1. Start from the bottom: bulky but light objects

The bottom of the backpack is the ideal place for everything that you will not need during the walk, but which is essential when you arrive at your destination or for the night: sleeping bag, mattress, clothes to sleep, changing clothes. Choose soft materials to avoid pressure points on your back. Avoid fragile or heavy objects in this area.

2. Area near the back: the heart of the weight

Place heavy items such as water, cookware, food and technical equipment. Keeping them close to the center of gravity helps maintain stability and correct posture. This is especially important on steep or rough trails.

3. Central and upper zone: useful but light objects

In the middle area of the backpack, place medium-weight items such as a first aid kit, torch, tools or batteries. At the top you put what you might need in case of sudden change of weather: waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, a thermal layer. So you can access it quickly without undoing everything.

4. Outside pockets: quick and smart access

The side pockets are perfect for bottles or small snacks. Those on the belt and shoulder straps can contain objects that you want to always have at hand: mobile phone, GPS, bars, sunscreen or handkerchiefs. Always maintain balance: distribute weight symmetrically.

5.The outer straps of the backpack: only the bare necessities

External straps are used to secure bulky items such as trekking poles or a light tent. Be careful though: avoid hanging swaying objects or easily get caught between rocks or vegetation. Everything outside must be well fixed and as compact as possible.

Packing a backpack is an art made of logic, experience and attention to detail. Here are the latest useful tips:
